5 Guiding Principles to Follow when Renting a Dumpster
To someone who is about to tackle a construction, renovation, or demolition, renting a dumpster is an unknown part of the project that comes with many questions. In all honesty through, when you boil it down to the bare essentials, this simple guide can be used to give a clear idea on where to start in your search for the right dumpster rental company. For those of us who are not in the commercial, industrial, or construction industries, it’s as easy as following this checklist on guiding principles to follow.
Determining dumpster size
Renting a dumpster begins by knowing what size you need and commonly, this ends up being the biggest mistake that most make. Renting too big makes little sense as you end up paying for more than you need. Meanwhile, going too small means you’ll inevitably need to upgrade to a larger size, increasing cost in the long run. The general rule of thumb we recommend following is to go with a 10-yard dumpster for small-sized renovations, a 20-yard dumpster for medium-sized renovation projects, a 30-yard dumpster if it’s a commercial construction project or a major home addition, or a 40-yard dumpster for commercial or industrial purposes. Be sure to speak with a representative before deciding on a size to get their input.
The type of waste you will be dumping
Dumpster rental companies generally do not allow one to throw out a mix of materials together. For example, wood cannot be mixed with gravel and/or fill. Depending on the material being dumped, there may also be weight considerations. The heavier it is, the more likely it will exceed weight limits. It’s key to consult with a representative before putting any money down to ensure there won’t be any unexpected surprises along the way.
Don’t break the law by disposing of hazardous waste
Hazardous waste does not belong in your dumpster rental. These include any sort of chemical products, herbicides, pesticides, radioactive materials, solvents, paints, flammable liquids, aerosol cans, propane tanks, motor oil, any sort of transmission or hydraulic oil, anti-freeze, refrigerator parts, paint chips, tires, batteries, medical waste, asbestos, dead animals, and more. If there are any questions regarding what you can and cannot put into your dumpster, get the input of a dumpster rental company representative before proceeding with a purchase.
Be sure to get multiple quotes
Do some homework into what is included and how much the charge is, for at least two dumpster rental companies. That way, you can weigh the advantages and disadvantages to each.
Negotiating price is sometimes permissible
Commercial contractors negotiate regularly and for those overseeing smaller projects, they should also be encouraged to negotiate. Ask about any discounts they may be able to provide and/or if they can match an existing offer. There are some dumpster rental companies who won’t budge and others who may. All you can do is ask and no one should hold it against you to do so.
