5 Ways to Maintain Safety on a Dumpster Rental Site
Junk disposal with a dumpster rental is usually not as simple as tossing waste in and forgetting about it. Throughout the waste disposal process, upholding safety is still a priority. Precautions regarding how to handle garbage and learning how to mitigate common hazards is key.
The first way to maintain safety on a dumpster rental site is by wearing the required safety apparel. At times, this might refer to protective face gear, goggles, gloves, and footwear. This ensures that anything with moving parts, materials falling to the ground, and/or debris bouncing off and from the dumpster is not going to seriously injure any person. Even if what is being tossed in does not come with moving pieces and even if it maintains very low safety risks, it is still generally recommended to wear safety apparel.
The second way to uphold safety with a dumpster rental is to make sure anyone handling materials and/or around the dumpster is wearing tough clothing. If the clothing is durable, then it is more likely to protect you against any nails, screws, wood, or metal splinters you come into contact with. Though you do want the clothing to be breathable, tough clothing is required to ensure that skin is not punctured or cut at any point during waste disposal.
Thirdly, there are usually a list of items that are allowed and not allowed to be placed in the dumpster. For example, hazardous materials and household cleaning products are not permitted to be disposed of in a dumpster rental. If a customer does choose to add hazardous materials to a dumpster, it only serves to contaminate all materials inside and will likely result in an additional fee to cover the costs of cleaning and/or contamination-related processing. In addition, tossing in hazardous materials can result in unintended serious damage to skin, eyes, and lungs if it is unknowingly inhaled or touched.
The fourth key to safety with a dumpster rental is in ensuring that what’s being tossed in is being evenly spread out. As debris is being loaded, remember that the dumpster rental company will inevitably have to come and pick it up. There are risks of spillage or tipping when a dumpster is not filled evenly. To this point, uneven weight distribution may also result in safety incidents for the company when retrieving the container. At the end of the day, this could result in someone getting hurt and/or additional fees for spillage.
The fifth recommendation we can make when handling a dumpster rental is to never attempt to move it on your own. A dumpster with materials in it can weigh tons. Without the right vehicle and knowledge, you may unintentionally cause property damage and personal injury.
By having a dumpster rental on hand, it makes waste management and disposal incredibly easier. Renovations, construction clean-ups, de-cluttering, and other uses of dumpster rentals are common across Canada. Even for the most experienced of dumpster users, maintaining safety is integral. The strategies recommended above will help to ensure that nobody gets hurt and that no damage comes to your property while the dumpster sits on it.
If there are any specific concerns, please be sure to speak with your local dumpster rental company representative for guidance. Additional protocols may be needed to be put in place, ensuring no harm comes to any stakeholder involved in the dumpster rental process.
