Why You Do Not Put Hazardous Waste in your Dumpster Rental
When you rent a dumpster or bin, hazardous waste is one of the few materials not accepted. Home dumpster rentals, construction dumpster rentals, and work dumpster rentals are all regulated by local laws. Any biomedical waste, hazardous waste, and/or any waste known as toxic or harmful to human beings upon exposure is not accepted.
Dumpster rentals are not used in the medical community for the aforementioned reasons. Biomedical waste includes any waste from human beings or animal care facilities, waste from medical or veterinary educational institutions, healthcare education centers, clinical testing and research laboratories, and facilities producing or testing vaccines. For these categories of waste, there are specific procedures and policies applying to their disposal. As a dumpster rental company, that’s not something we take on.
There are also regulations guarding against human biomedical waste such as human tissue, organs, or body parts. Dumpster rentals do not handle animal biomedical waste, such as animal tissue, organs, body parts, blood, any materials saturated or dripping with animal blood, and/or any animal fluids extracted for diagnosis or during surgeries, treatments, or autopsies. The aforementioned categories are not the only items/materials not permitted for inclusion in a dumpster rental. Microbiology waste including cultures, specimen stocks, vaccines, or any lab materials with exposure to these; clinical and lab waste such as needles, syringes, blades, or broken lab glass; and/or blood from human beings, items saturated with human blood, or any contaminated materials are also not permitted.
So why are all these materials not allowed in a dumpster rental – well, beyond having to adhere to regulation, these materials also contaminate everything else that’s in the dumpster. So therefore, if there is a mound of recyclable materials in there or items which could be donated, contact with hazardous materials immediately invalidates all that and they must be treated as hazardous materials all the same. Furthermore, improper disposal of biomedical materials or hazardous waste is potentially life-threatening. It can contaminate food and drinking water, spread disease, and create a higher risk of injury or infection by workers and anyone in close proximity to the dumpster.
For anyone renting a dumpster in Toronto and who puts in hazardous waste purposefully or by accident, it could result in significantly higher charges. Needless to say, as a dumpster rental company, we don’t want to see anyone overcharged, or have our customers or workers experience risks in transporting or emptying a dumpster.
Please note, hazardous waste materials include any paints or solvents, motor oil or antifreeze, pesticides or fungicides, electronics such as computers or smartphones, mercury-containing waste such as thermometers or fluorescent lighting, any aerosols or propane cylinders, caustics and commercial cleaning agents, refrigerant-containing appliances, batteries of any variety, ammunition, and radioactive waste.
