Spring is the Time to Recycle Electronics like TVs, Computers, Printers, Phones, and Cameras
Electronics are not the sort of thing you can just drop off at the side of the road and expect to have handled by garbage pick-up.
Unlike other types of waste, electronic waste requires careful handling. Electronics contain dangerous chemicals that, if let out into our landfills and into the environment, can cause significant damage to the natural world as well as human beings. To properly dispose of electronics in Toronto, you can either call an electronics-friendly waste management company or drop off your electronics at a depot.
Electronics are one of those things where we’re upgrading them all the time. The electronics industry is built entirely around consumerism and consumption being a good thing. Tech consumers here are never completely content with the model they have, if there’s a newer, perceivably more advanced model available.
So this constant upgrading of TVs, smartphones, laptops, tablets, and more leads to high amounts of waste. Unfortunately, old electronics are oftentimes not sellable because of how dated the tech is. Or, alternatively, a device breaks down and the cost to fix outweighs the cost to just purchase a new one.
Regardless of how your waste is created, if you have electronics you’re not sure as to how to dispose of it, or whether it’s waste or recycling, a waste disposal expert can help. What we will say is to never just toss it into a dumpster. Not only are there chemicals involve but some of the materials, such as the wires and plastics, can be recycled.
Some of the electronics which require examination and careful handling include TVs – cathode ray tubes, plasmas, LEDs, LCDs, flat-screens, and rear projection – as well as computers and laptops, keywords, computer screens, VCRs, DVD players, CD players, printers, telephones and smartphones, kitchen equipment like microwaves and toasters, radios, and cameras.
There are several items not considered electronic waste, accepted as waste in a separate category. Batteries, for example, are hazardous waste. Remote controls can have the batteries removed and the control itself can be thrown away with the regular waste or recycling. Smoke detectors and alarms can be handled similarly. VHS tapes, CDs, DVDs, and cassettes can be donated or disposed of as garbage accordingly.
Throughout Toronto, there are drop-off depots where you can let your electronic waste be handled by someone else. Toronto garbage pick-up will generally remove electronics at the side of the road as well, if you have no one else to take them. Alternatively, there are some waste management companies who can help as well. Regardless of how you dispose of your electronics, what we want to communicate is to never throw them out as waste. There are so many different components to them which can be recycled, in addition to the chemicals which need to be removed.
